Protests planned across Europe on 12th June to mark Opening of European Games in Azerbaijan - Civic Space

With human rights advocacy and campaigning impossible in the current climate in Azerbaijan, the Sport for Rights campaign is coordinating with human rights organisations across Europe to organise a series of protest actions on 12 June to mark the opening ceremony of the European Games. Protesters will be calling for an end to the ongoing human rights crackdown in Azerbaijan, and the release of the country’s jailed journalists and human rights defenders.

ARTICLE 19 is joining with Sport for Rights, Amnesty International UK, Index on Censorship, and Platform to hold the demonstration in London, as part of a series of parallel protests across European capitals. Actions will take place in Barcelona, Berlin, Geneva, London, Oslo, Prague, San Foca (Italy), Tbilisi, Warsaw, Zagreb, and other locations to be confirmed. In addition, there will be a relevant roundtable discussion the same day in Istanbul.
