Law and policy

ARTICLE 19’s legal and policy work sits at the core of what we do, from fighting for protection for human rights defenders under threat to influencing international standards on digital rights. We provide legal analyses of national laws relating to free expression, submit expert opinions through amicus briefs to national and regional courts, and shape international standards on the right to freedom of expression and information through UN advocacy and the production of policy documents on core free expression issues. Our legal experts have enabled us to engage with states and international actors to shape standards in new areas of international law, as well as providing toolkits and resources for civil society in order to challenge violations and tackle “hate speech”.
