#WhyProtest? Kicking off the conversation

#WhyProtest? Kicking off the conversation - Civic Space

To coincide with hundreds of activists gathering Bogotá for International Civil Society Week, ARTICLE 19 joined together with our Civic Space Initiative partners to launch a social media Thunderclap to talk about the right to protest.

People on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr, as well as those at the sessions on protest in Bogotá kicked off a discussion about #whyprotest is important to them.

Whether as a vehicle for creative expression, a means to fight for justice, or part of the struggle for equality, all over the world protest leads to progressive social change all the time.

However, many governments are starting to crack down harder on people using their rights to protest. We created our social media shout-out in support of protest to challenge restrictions and celebrate protest in all its diverse forms.

If you joined the Thunderclap don’t end the conversation now – keep using the hashtag #whyprotest to share your stories. And if you didn’t spot our Thunderclap before it launched, it’s not too late to tweet #whyprotest matters to you. This is just the beginning!
