UNESCO: Invite to special rapporteurs joint declaration launch

On 6 May 2014, at the UNESCO World Press Freedom Day International Conference in Paris, France, four freedom of expression rapporteurs will launch their 2014 Joint Declaration on Universality of the Right to Freedom of Expression 

The 16th Joint Declaration highlights the fundamental role freedom of expression has both in its own right and in pursuit of other human rights and development goals. The declaration outlines the key recommendations for states to ensure that all individuals in the society can exercise this right without any discrimination.

Joint Declarations by the expression special rapporteurs have been adopted annually since 1999, covering current universal challenges to freedom of expression.

Speakers:

  • Catalina Botero, the Organization of American States Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression
  • Frank La Rue, UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression
  • Dunja Mijatovic, the Representative on Freedom of Expression, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe,

The panel will also host speakers from ARTICLE 19 and the Center for Law and Democracy.

Journalists and the conference participants are invited to attend the 2014 Joint Declaration launch, set to start at 11:00 on 6 May 2014 in the UNESCO Headquarter, Salle II.
