The Future of Democracy: Speech, Thought, Sovereignty, and Power in the Age of Platforms and AI

The Future of Democracy: Speech, Thought, Sovereignty, and Power in the Age of Platforms and AI - Digital

On 15-16 October, The Open Markets Institute and ARTICLE 19 convened a high-level two-day conference of leading thinkers, lawmakers, technologists, and advocates to discuss the direct and growing threats to human rights and democracy posed by today’s dominant online communications platforms, the rise of AI, and interference by foreign states.

We were joined in Brussels by Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa; former Italian President Mario Monti; former EVP of the European Commission Margrethe Vestager; MEP Greens/EFA Alexandra Geese, among others. Michael McGrath, the Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, represented the European Commission.

The conference provided an invaluable and timely opportunity for the world’s leading voices to come together to discuss the urgent need to stand up to the Big Tech’s influence over our speech and information space; the need for bold and brave enforcement of existing digital rules; and how we can imagine and build better alternatives grounded in values and the respect of rights.

You can watch the recordings of the conference below.

Inspired by the event, our friends at Tech Policy Press have also launched their Ideas for Europe’s Future series, where you can read contributions from some of our speakers.
