Open Letter on South Korea’s Policies on Protecting Human Rights in North Korea - Protection

On 21 March 2020, ARTICLE 19 joined the International Coalition to Stop Crimes Against Humanity in North Korea, 67 other non-governmental organisations, and seven prominent individuals in sending a letter to South Korean President Moon Jae-in urging South Korea to strengthen its position on human rights issues in North Korea. While noting the important role that South Korea has played in increasing international pressure on North Korea, the letter raised concerns about recent decisions and actions taken by the South Korean government. It noted South Korea’s decision to withdraw support for a UN General Assembly resolution condemning human rights violations in North Korea and the decision to forcibly repatriate two North Korean fisherman. The letter urged the South Korean government to clarify the steps it will take to address the human rights situation in North Korea, sponsor a UN Human Rights Council resolution on North Korea, and support the mandate of the UN. Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the DPRK, among other actions.
