In conjunction with the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, ARTICLE 19, in collaboration with Malaysian journalists and civil society organisations, is launching a campaign called #PencuciMulut. The campaign, led by journalists and media practitioners, aims to counter ‘hate speech’ and discrimination in both online and offline media by highlighting the stories of individuals targeted by ‘hate speech’ and exposing those who incite hatred. It also seeks to promote ethical standards among peers and reinforce the fact that freedom of expression and the right to equality are essential to human dignity.
Why #PencuciMulut?
#PencuciMulut translates to ‘dessert’ in Malay, but it also literally means ‘mouth cleanser’. We aim to cleanse ‘hateful’ emotions and promote respectful dialogue. Just as our desserts reflect diverse cultures, we want to foster the ideas of harmony and acceptance. To further the campaign, journalists will produce articles, podcasts, photo essays, short videos, infographics, and other media pieces that present positive narratives centered around tolerance and inclusion. The campaign will target both media practitioners and the public.
The Role of the Media
We believe that countering ‘hate speech’ in Malaysia requires a holistic approach involving multiple key players, particularly media professionals and journalists. Media and journalists play a crucial role in shaping policy-making and societal opinions. As ‘hate speech’ and stereotypes targeting minorities and marginalised communities proliferate in Malaysia, balanced and fair media reporting is more important than ever. While some journalists have demonstrated positive practices and courage in challenging hateful narratives, there is a significant need for additional training and resources to uphold ethical standards when reporting on sensitive subjects.
The ultimate mission of the #PencuciMulut campaign is to counter messages of hate with messages of acceptance and inclusion. Together, the media and civil society can enhance public awareness and policy initiatives, working towards a more equal and compassionate society that we can all be proud of.
