Malaysia: International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) - Transparency

On 5 December, ARTICLE 19, together with the Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) and the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department (BHEUU), commemorated the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) by hosting the IDUAI Roundtable 2023 to tackle the global theme for IDUAI this year, ‘The Importance of the Online Space for Access to Information.’

The roundtable was attended by government representatives, government-linked corporations, civil society organisations, telecommunications corporation representatives and academia. Through multistakeholder discussions with key leaders, many initiatives were announced to pave the way for the enactment of the Freedom of Information Act and the adoption of the Omnibus Law.

Ultimately, the IDUAI Roundtable showcased both the efforts of various groups as well as the many challenges still ahead in bringing a conducive information ecosystem to Malaysia. It demonstrated the need to align all efforts as well as the commitments by the Madani government in creating a robust information ecosystem.
