Pro democracy protestors demonstrating in Thailand

Our podcasts delve into aspects of freedom of expression; from exploring the right to protest, to fighting for basic freedoms under repressive regimes.

‘Silenced’, presented by Nicola Kelly and produced by Chris Hooton, explores extraordinary real-life stories from journalists and activists around the world. We hear the experiences of those who have been arrested, detained and murdered in their pursuit of the truth. Told in the first-person narrative and through immersive sound, the series takes us into the lives of those seeking justice and holding their governments to account. ‘Silenced’ was highly commended for ‘Podcast of the Year’ at the Society of Editors Media Freedom Awards 2022.

‘Boundaries of Expression’ takes an in-depth look at freedom of expression issues, including central debates surrounding topics such as the right to truth, protest, privacy and surveillance. An additional mini series on the right to protest explores limits to our right to speak freely, focusing on women’s rights, the environment and climate change, the monarchy and international sporting events.
