Equally safe

Women journalists face uniquely gendered risks when conducting their vital work. A gendered lens is vital to understand and mitigate these risks.

But women journalists are not a monolithic group. Their experiences differ depending on their race, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, and other characteristics. That’s why an intersectional feminist approach – one that accounts for these intersecting forms of oppression – is needed to enhance their safety.

From 2021–26, ARTICLE 19’s project Equally Safe: Towards a Feminist Approach to the Safety of Journalists explored what such an approach might look like and what benefits it might bring to women journalists worldwide.
