ARTICLE 19 raises alarm over the ongoing freedom of expression crisis at the heart of Israel’s war on Gaza. The crisis has silenced voices and continues to perpetuate impunity. We welcome the ceasefire, but know it alone will not be enough: there must be accountability for crimes committed in this war. Human rights and freedom of expression must guide the next steps – without them, there can be no justice or lasting peace.
This crisis has already taken a devastating toll on civilian life, including children. It has also resulted in an information blackout in the occupied Gaza strip with devastating consequences. For those caught up in the conflict, information can be as life-saving as humanitarian relief. It is needed for individuals to access water, food, shelter, and medical treatment, to communicate with their loved ones, or to avoid zones of active hostilities.
Freedom of expression and unhindered journalistic reporting are an essential prerequisite to monitor and ensure respect of international humanitarian law, help prevent further violations and suffering and provide accountability for war crimes and human rights atrocities.
This is why freedom of expression and information must be unequivocally upheld and underpin any humanitarian response to the ongoing crisis.
