Message from Quinn McKew, Executive Director of ARTICLE 19:

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a reminder to us that power comes in different shapes and sizes.  The fierceness of her intellect and the passion voiced in her iconic dissents defied her physical appearance.  While the tone of her voice could be soft, her ideas never were.

ARTICLE 19 champions voices raised in dissent, who call for justice despite the costs to themselves.  At times, it can seem a lonely endeavor, so it is useful to reflect on Justice Ginsburg’s thoughts on dissent.

“Dissents speak to a future age. It’s not simply to say, ‘My colleagues are wrong and I would do it this way.’ But the greatest dissents do become court opinions and gradually over time their views become the dominant view. So that’s the dissenter’s hope: that they are writing not for today, but for tomorrow.”
Rest in Peace, Notorious RBG.  We carry on the fights you started, one step at a time.
