International Annual Report 2022: Raising Our Voices Together - Protection

A year into our Power of Our Voices strategy, ARTICLE 19 has launched its annual report for 2022

The Raising Our Voices Together report reflects on the year that saw international crises in every corner of the world. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The pillars of democracy cracking in Tunisia. An attack against the press every 13 hours – and attacks against ARTICLE 19 itself – in Mexico. The murders of British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira in the Amazon.

Despite those crises, the report shows us a sign of hope: in the inspirational stories of impact achieved by ARTICLE 19 colleagues through the year.

In just the first few months of the protests in Iran, ARTICLE 19 immediately acted to protect the data and privacy of over 500 arrestees, ensuring they stayed safe and could stay in touch with loved ones.

During the turbulent election time in Brazil, ARTICLE 19 helped to maintain voters’ confidence in the electoral process, and more people registered to vote than in any other election in the country’s history.

And in Europe, our years of advocacy contributed to a new Digital Markets Act that will help rebalance power in digital markets and end many of Big Tech’s harmful practices, as well as a new initiative to address the increasing prevalence of legal harassment against journalists (SLAPPs).

All this would not have been possible without our partners and supporters. It is thanks to them that we can harness the experience, knowledge, passion, and tenacity of the free expression movement to build a world where everyone, everywhere, can realise the power of their voices.

Quinn McKew, Executive Director of ARTICLE 19, said:

‘Freedom of expression and democracy are under attack as never before. But the stories in this report share the resilience, creativity, and tenacity of those pushing back, speaking up, and stepping up to lead.

‘We can tip the balance in the right direction with increased financial and human investment in the freedom of expression movement. We hope you join us in this journey.’
