Following its re-establishment in 2005, ARTICLE 19’s Middle East and North Africa (MENA) programme has continued to develop and expand its programme of activities across the region. Article 19 is now represented in Amman – Jordan by Sa’eda Kilani, MENA Consultant/ Programme Manager.

The programme has refined its strategic priorities reflecting lesson’s learned from recent experience in the region, information from partners and the ongoing monitoring of developments across the region, in particular in Yemen, Jordan, Bahrain, Egypt, Tunisia and Lebanon.

While the Programme aims to respond to freedom of expression violations and continue to explore opportunities across the region, it has identified the following as its top priorities:

• Strengthening the legal and regulatory framework for freedom of expression and the right to information across the Middle East and North Africa and with a particular emphasis on the Gulf sub-region. 
• Building the capacity of government officials, civil society members and media professionals to implement freedom of expression rights through training, best practice standards, network building and provision of information. 
• Promoting media diversity, by nurturing an independent, diverse and gender-sensitive media. 
• Promoting and enhancing women’s rights for freedom of expression and information with a particular focus on gender-sensitive media and the participation of women in elections. 
• Campaigning against attacks on free speech and particularly censorship of the internet and artistic expression.

The Middle East and North Africa Programme is now based in Amman, Jordan,
in addition to London, United Kingdom.
