![]() | Our Work Africa: Partners A central aspect of ARTICLE 19’s approach involves working in partnership with local organisations to build capacity in freedom of expression and to enhance our local knowledge and legitimacy. At present, the Africa programme works with thirty partners across Africa: African Communication Regulation Authorities Network (ACRAN) ACRAN is a sub-regional organization established in 1998 in Libreville, Gabon. ACRAN aims at developing and reinforcing the co-operation between the communication regulatory authorities in Africa. It currently counts 25 members from Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Sao Tomé, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo and Tunisia. The headquarters of ACRAN are established at Cotonou, capital of the Republic of Benin. www.acran.org/index.en.php African Women's Development & Communication Network (FEMNET) FEMNET seeks to facilitate and coordinate the sharing of experiences, ideas, information, and strategies for human rights promotion among African women's organisations through networking, communication, capacity-building and advocacy at the regional and international levels. www.femnet.or.ke/ APC Africa ICT Policy Monitor APC aims to build more inclusive information and communication technology decision-making processes by facilitating civil society engagement through building their capacity and supporting advocacy, at national and international levels. africa.rights.apc.org/ Association for Media Development in Southern Sudan (AMDISS) Association for Media Development in Southern Sudan (AMDISS) has a membership of several journalists, editors and other media representatives throughout Sudan. AMDISS promote training of professional media organisations and workers by identifying training needs of the media organisations; as well as conducting advocacy for the rights of media organisations and workers by lobbying and facilitating establishment of independent media; facilitating the development of independent media; lobbying to ensure establishment of basic laws of guaranteeing independent media. Center for Media Studies and Peace Building (CEMESP) CEMESP’s primary goal is to consolidate peace, freedom of expression, democracy and development and increase the space for participatory governance of the media in holistic peace building and development at all levels of society. This is being planned through the provision of training and research for the media in peace building, advocacy and development. http://cemesp-liberia.org/ Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) CISLAC is a non-governmental, non-profit legislative advocacy, lobbying, information sharing and research organization. (CISLAC) works towards bridging the gap between the legislature and the electorate; by enhancing lobbying strategies; engagement of bills before their passage into law; manpower development for lawmakers, legislative aides, politicians and the civil society, as well as civic education on the tenets of democracy. http://www.cislacnigeria.org/ Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative CHRI’s mandate is to promote awareness of and adherence to the Harare Principles, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other internationally recognised human rights instruments and declarations made by the Commonwealth Heads of Governments as well as domestic instruments supporting human rights in the Commonwealth. CHRI believes that the promotion and protection of human rights is the responsibility of governments but that the active participation of civil society acting in concert is vital to ensuring the rule of law and the realisation of human rights. www.humanrightsinitiative.org/ EcoNews Africa EcoNews Africa is a regional NGO registered in Kenya. The purpose of the organisation is to enhance the role of East Africa's NGOs and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) to influence policy-making on issues of sustainable development, in particular on trade and information. www.econewsafrica.org/ Fahamu The word Fahamu means ‘understanding’ or ‘consciousness’ in Kiswahili. Fahamu has a vision of the world where people organise to emancipate themselves from all forms of oppression, recognise their social responsibilities, respect each other’s differences, and realise their full potential. It undertakes a wide range of activities in support of these objectives, including lobbying, education, monitoring, research, publicity and litigation and the funding of legal cases that advance these rights. In the process, it networks with, and collaborates with, a wide range of organisations locally and internationally. www.fxi.org.za/ Independent Journalism Centre (IJC), Nigeria IJC is an independent NGO which works for the independence of the media and extension of the frontiers of freedom of expression in Nigeria. www.derechos.net/ijc/ International Federation of Journalists (Africa Office) In Africa, the work of the International Federation of Journalists has focused on the development of independent and quality journalism in support of democratic, social and economic development. The implementation of IFJ activities has been particularly channelled via its 30 member organisations on the African continent. www.ifjafrique.org/anglais/index.php International Media Support The long-term strategic vision of International Media Support is to contribute to peace, stability and the development of democracy in conflict and conflict threatened areas. This is achieved through rapid interventions to promote and strengthen press freedom and professional journalism and to improve the working conditions of local journalists and media practitioners. The aim is to allow the population in endangered areas to exercise their right to express themselves freely - also in times of crisis. www.i-m-s.dk/ Journaliste en Danger (JED) Journalist en danger (JED) is an independent and non partisan organisation created in Kinshasa from the initiative of a group of Congolese journalists (DRCongo) and dedicated to the defence and promotion of press freedom, first in the DRC and then since May 2003, in the eight other central African countries covered by the “Organisation des medias d’Afrique Centrale” (OMAC) www.jed-afrique.org/ Kenyan Section of the International Commission of Jurists Established in 1959, the Kenya Section of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ Kenya) is a non-governmental, non-partisan, not for profit making, membership organisation registered in Kenya. www.icj-kenya.org/ Khartoum Centre for Human Rights and Environmental Development The Khartoum Centre for Human Rights and Environmental Development aims to introduce and promote human rights, good government, the involvement of women in society and extend aid to those afflicted by war and desertification in Sudan. www.kichr.org Makerere University Makerere University is Uganda's premier institution of higher learning. With a student population of over 30,000, it ranks as one of the largest in East and Central Africa. ARTICLE 19 works with the Mass Communication Department. www.mak.ac.ug/ Media Foundation for West Africa The Media Foundation for West Africa is a regional NGO based in Accra, Ghana. It was established in 1997 to defend and promote the rights and freedoms of the media, and generally, to help expand the boundaries of freedom of speech and expression in West Africa. www.mfwaonline.org/ Media Institute (MI), Kenya The Media Institute was founded in 1996 to advance and defend freedom of expression and promote journalistic excellence in Kenya. Officially launched in September 1992, MISA focuses primarily on the need to promote free, independent and pluralistic media, as envisaged in the 1991 Windhoek Declaration. www.misa.org/ Media Rights Agenda (MRA) MRA was established in 1993 as an independent NGO for the purpose of promoting and protecting media freedom and freedom of expression in Nigeria. www.mediarightsagenda.org/ Norwegian People’s Aid NPA is the labour movement’s humanitarian organisation for solidarity. The organisation supports human rights groups whilst showing respect for the partners’ integrity and their right to set their own conditions. www.npaid.org/ Palme International Centre The Palme International Center is a Swedish NGO with ties to the national labour movement, working with international development cooperation and the forming of public opinion surrounding international political and security issues. The centre's areas of interest include democracy, human rights and peace resolution. www.palmecenter.org/ PANOS Institute West Africa The Panos Institute’s work to ensure that information is effectively used to foster public debate, pluralism and democracy. Globally and nationally, Panos works with media and other information actors to enable developing countries to shape and communicate their own development agendas through informed public debate, particularly focusing on amplifying the voices of the poor and marginalised. www.panos-ao.org/ Southern Africa Communications For Development (SACOD) SACOD is a network of southern African filmmakers, film and video production organisations and distributors which promotes and empowers the makers and distributors of films and videos to communicate development issues. www.sacod.org.za/ Sudan Organisation Against Torture (SOAT) SOAT is an independent human rights NGO established in 1993 working in Sudan and UK and has members worldwide. SOAT's primary objective is to prevent torture and challenge impunity. SOAT also works to rehabilitate Sudanese survivors of torture; provide legal assistance to survivors and individuals threatened with inhumane and degrading punishments; provide human rights education and research, document and campaign against human rights abuses in Sudan on a national and international level. www.soatsudan.org/ University of the Witwatersrand ARTICLE 19 works with the School of literature and Language Studies at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg www.wits.ac.za/ West African Journalists Association (WAJA) WAJA is the umbrella organisation for journalists associations in West Africa.
