The ARTICLE 19 Africa Programme is one of the oldest within ARTICLE 19. The central goals of the programme are as follows:
  • Strengthen legal, institutional and policy frameworks for freedom of expression, access to information and access to the means of communication.
  • Assist governments to strengthen international governance organisations and multinationals transparency in Africa.
  • Promote an independent, diverse pluralistic media in Africa.
  • Engage with civil society actors to build global, regional and national capacities to monitor and shape the policies of governments, corporate actors, professional groups and multilateral institutions with regard to freedom of expression, access to information and access to the means of communication.
  • Promote broader popular participation by all citizens in public affairs and decision making at the global, regional, national and local levels through the promotion of freedom of expression and access to information.
