ARTICLE 19 is currently concentrating its efforts on elections to be held in 2008/09 in Angola, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Zimbabwe. In order to encourage a free and fair vote, and respect for international standards, allowing every voice (journalists, civil society, candidates, parties…) to express themselves, ARTICLE 19 is monitoring the ongoing legal and policy situation in a number of countries. For Angola, ARTICLE 19 has already published an analysis of the Angolan electoral and media laws ‘Freedom of Expression and the Angolan Elections’. In 2007 the Africa programme also co-facilitated a conference with the African Commission’s Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression in Africa, Pansy Tlakula, and Freidrich Ebert Stiftung (EFS). The Conference, held in Luanda for the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Electoral Commissioners, focused on promotion on freedom of expression during elections. Information regarding the elections in Ghana, Ivory Coast and Zimbabwe and further information on the Angolan elections will follow soon.
