AU

The African Union aims to build regional political, economic and social unity, and created the AChHPR in 1979 to protect human rights in Africa. ARTICLE 19 supports and promotes African attempts to create democratic institutions, develop good governance and strengthen human rights.

The AChHPR was created by the now African Union at its 1979 general assembly and came into force on 21 October 1986. It is overseen by the ACHPR and the ACtHPR.

Article 9 of the AChHPR provides for the right to freedom of expression:

ARTICLE 9

1 Every individual shall have the right to receive information.

2. Every individual shall have the right to express and disseminate his opinions within the law.
