ARTICLE 19 runs
access to information campaigns with our national partners. We campaign for the adoption and/or implementation of freedom of information legislation, and for the pro-active dissemination of information of public interest held by public bodies and private actors. We adopt a rights-based approach to promoting the development of a more inclusive and equitable society and improving citizen participation in decision-making processes at all levels.
ARTICLE 19 runs
freedom of expression campaigns with national partners; we raise awareness about freedom of expression standards and we advocate for the implementation of legislation and measures to safeguard pluralism and diversity of views. ARTICLE 19 campaigns against the widespread use of defamation laws and censorship, and on behalf of individuals imprisoned or persecuted for expressing their opinions. We promote the provision of public interest content in the media and address the threats to diversity and pluralism posed by media concentration.

ARTICLE 19 joins
global efforts towards greater transparency. ARTICLE 19 is a member of the Freedom of Information Advocates Network and coordinates the Global Transparency Initiative, to strengthen transparency among International Financial Institutions.
ARTICLE 19 advocates on behalf of
victims of censorship, including prisoners of censorship incarcerated in state prisons, individuals silenced through the use and abuse of defamation laws or other forms of state coercion, and those killed, threatened, or gagged by their or other communities for expressing their views and acts of dissent. ARTICLE 19 works on behalf of journalists, political leaders, activists, artists, and ordinary men, women and children whose right to express political, cultural, social and economic opinions is violated.
Following the infamous fatwa imposed in 1989 on Salman Rushdie, ARTICLE 19 set up and coordinated the International Rushdie Defence Committee.
ARTICLE 19
lobbies national governments, regional and international instruments, to bring national laws in line with the best international standards and on behalf of individuals and groups who are persecuted for expressing their views. We lobby world leaders to take account of violations of freedom of expression when dealing with offending governments.
ARTICLE 19 regularly issues
press releases, both internationally and in the countries where we work, to raise the profile of the issues we work on, and get greater impact. We have the language skills to conduct interviews in English, French, Russian, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish, and we can deal with a large range of the European broadcast media.
ARTICLE 19 provides
resources to the free expression community: we develop and run legal and professional training for NGOs, judges and lawyers, journalists, media owners, media lawyers, public officials and parliamentarians. We run training-of-trainer programs, and support the creation of national or regional campaigning network.
