![]() | Advocacy: Campaigns: Aung San Suu Kyi cAMPAIGN TO fREE aUNG sAN sUU KYI ![]() Aung San Suu Kyi Honorary ARTICLE 19 board member and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, has come to symbolise the fight for democracy and free expression in Burma. Leader of the National League for Democracy, Suu Kyi led her party to victory in the 1990 general elections, only to see the results nullified and the military refusing to handover power. Suu Kyi has spent eleven of the last seventeen years in detention for her peaceful protest in championing free expression and human rights in Burma. Her health is now said to be declining and she has reportedly been denied medical care. Despite universal international support for Aung San Suu Kyi, there have been insufficient and unsuccessful concrete actions taken to secure her release. In January 2007, the United Nations Security Council moved to pass a resolution on Burma, which was however vetoed by China and Russia. ARTICLE 19 has joined a worldwide campaign to demand the release of Aung San Suu Kyi. We lobby governments and international governmental organisations to exert their influence over the Burmese junta including through the introduction of a full arms embargo and targeted trade sanctions.
